When to Walk Away: Recognizing Overtrading

Overtrading rarely announces itself as a decision — it shows up as a series of small choices that each seem reasonable in isolation. Recognizing the pattern while it's happening is harder than describing it after the fact, which is exactly why it's worth knowing the signs in advance.

The clearest signal: trading to "fix" the session

A trade placed specifically to recover a previous loss — rather than because it independently clears your usual criteria — is the single most common form of overtrading. It's identifiable by the reasoning behind it: if the honest answer to "why this trade" is "to make back what I just lost," that's the signal to stop, not to size up.

Other patterns worth watching for

  • Position sizes creeping up mid-session without a specific reason tied to the setup — see our position sizing framework for how size should actually move.
  • Trading pairs you wouldn't normally consider simply because they're what's currently available and you feel like you should be doing something.
  • Skipping your own checklist on a trade because pausing to check feels like it might cause you to miss it.
  • Losing track of how many trades you've placed in the session — if you can't quickly answer that question, it's often already too many.
WHY A PRE-SET STOPPING POINT HELPS

Deciding your stopping point before the session starts — a number of trades, a time, or a loss limit — removes the need to make that judgment call in the exact moment you're least equipped to make it well. See our daily routine guide for where this fits into a session.

What to do when you notice it

The honest answer is usually just to stop — close the terminal, or at minimum step away from placing new entries for the rest of the day. There's no trick that lets you keep trading productively once the pattern has started; the value is entirely in recognizing it early enough to not need one.
